On one level, rural areas hold for us images that are classically beautiful and reassuring. The safety, the serenity and the orderliness of life that is lived close to the land. For a time, at least - we can leave behind us our wider addiction to the conquest and domination that have become integral to our cities - those urban places, smothered in concrete and tarmac. For a time, at least - all you can hear is the silence heard in all such solitude.
